Through celebrity endorsement, Minx Nails has become the latest trend in nail art (is that a thing?). It's a foil like film that essentially gets shrink wrapped to your nails using a heat source. Aside from the fact that the process allows your manicure to last longer, because it doesn't chip; Minx also comes in a bunch of cool patterns, particularly metallic ones, that wouldn't have the same effect if done with paint.
For those of you who do not live near a salon that uses Minx (I found one in Quebec), the company has teamed up with Sephora and OPI to make a D.I.Y version of the product. They come in 8 different patterns. I tried the Black and Gold Geometric (on top) and the Chrome Lace. The process seems pretty simple: They come in 16 pre-cut strips in different sizes, so you choose one, rub it to warm up the adhesive, and apply it to your nail smoothing out any air bubbles. I had difficulty with this. The film is kind of thick, so it puckered a bit at the edges when I was trying to smooth it out. Luckily, you can't really tell unless you are examining them, so most people complimented them without noticing my shoddy manicuring skills.
The nails are only supposed to last for a day or two, given that the first time you get a shower they start to peel. I stretched this a little further by trying to glue them back down with clear nail polish (I was only moderately successful in this). Bottom line; they look really cool, I felt like I had robo-nails, but they are kind of a hassle for every day use. They are, however, definitely a good idea if you have somewhere to go. Tip: if you are going to put these on; keep your nails short, they are gaudy enough without the help of your talons.
PS- If you are looking at my hands and thinking, "Weird! They are so tiny and child-like," shut up because my sister says they're nice.
