I Saw The Sign, and I Wanna Be a Fly Girl

SO my obsession with early 90s music has sort of inspired this post. I want to look like a cross between a Fly Girl and Ace of Base (all members). I'm pretty sure I'm going to be a Fly Girl for Halloween this year--if you steal my idea I will hurt you--but for real life I'll probably have to take it down a notch.

Note the lack of J.Lo in this fly girl video. I tried to find one because it would have been hilarious; YouTube, however, didn't have many options. On a side note: can anyone tell me what the girl with the brown hair screams at the beginning of the Ace of Base video?

Here are some things I found to get the look:

Cutout Shoulder Top, Re Collection $97.30 @shopbop.com. Knee Pads, $65.00 @ sincityskates.com. ASOS Slash Back Unitard, $37.50 @ASOS.com. Gummy Bracelet With Peace Sign $11.00 @ Asos.com. Cover Girl Continuous Color Lipstick in French Toast, around $6.00 at any drug store. Aqua Contrast Cut Out Bodice Cat Suit, $186.00. ASOS ACE Leather Brogue Cleat Sole Boots $169.00 @ASOS.com. Top Shop Long Sleeve Ribbed Top $20.00.

I love all of these things; my favourites, however, are a toss up between the white collared shirt and the brown lipstick. If you want to go full 90s with the lipstick keep it heavy and matte with a primer under it, you'll look like Drew Barrymore in her Letterman flashing days. Alternatively, you could just mix it with some gloss for a more modern look.

Jewellery Finds

I was in New York recently, and while hitting up some street markets I came across some really interesting pieces from independent, local jewellery designers. It inspired me to post a few cool pieces I've seen recently.

Necklaces

Clockwise from top left: Pepita Coppelia handmade woven necklace $120.00, Triskaidekaphobia gold tooth pendant necklace, price unknown, Erica Weiner Waldorf Astoria pendant necklace, $85.00, Wink and Flip Honeycomb bib necklace, $25.00

The gold tooth necklace is one of many creepy but cool pieces from jewellery designer Triskaidekaphobia (meaning fear of the number 13). Daisy Lowe is a celebrity fan of this line. Also, take a look at Erica Weiner Jewellery, where I found the Waldorf Astoria necklace. It's an old cocktail stick from the 1940s that was cast in brass. The line features handmade vintage inspired jewellery, and things created out of found objects.

Bracelets

Clockwise from top left: Erica Weiner brass twig bracelet, $100.00, Frieda and Nellie "Bubble Gum" friendship bracelet, $150.00, Marc by Marc Jacobs plated brass "Cameo Bracelet", $20.00, American Eagle "Denim Twist Bracelet", $12.50

Remember friendship bracelets? So do Frieda and Nellie. The NYC based jewellery company features a whole range on friendship bracelets with a grown-up twist, like the "Bubble Gum" bracelet, pictured above. The best part is, each piece is one-of-a-kind and handmade.

Earrings

Clockwise from top left: Erica Weiner "Atlas Stud" earrings, $25.00, Ralph and Duchess ear cuffs, $120.00, Urban Outfitters raw crystal studs in purple, $34.00, Top Shop "Flower Hoop" earrings, $18.00

I love these punk-meets-Victoriana flower ear cuffs by Ralph and Duchess! They are so pretty. They are also available in silver.

Rings

Clockwise from top left: Marc by Marc Jacobs "Maripol Spring Ring" $20.00, Elizabeth and James "Cluster Ring" $395.00, House of Harlow 1960 "Cream Sunburst Ring" $45.00, Erica Anenberg "Gold Soiree Twosome Ring", $68.00

I really like this simple (and a little bit tough) Elizabeth and James ring. It's made of sterling silver and rose gold. Erica Anenberg also makes some really pretty jewellery. She is an L.A based designer whose stuff is popular with celebs, and her pieces are described as classically innocent, yet edgy and versatile.

Trend Following: Utilitarian

I'm really enjoying the utilitarian trend right now. Here are some runway examples of the look:

from left: Marc Jacobs, Rodarte, ChloƩ, Burberry Prorsum

And now here are some military inspired pieces for less:

from left: All Saints jumpsuit $195.00, Mango jacket $185.00, Urban Outfitters shorts $48.00, jeffrey Campbell open-toe suede boots $158.00

These neutrals are so easy to wear, and to avoid looking like you are wearing a costume they look great paired with something floral, or girly. I especially love what the mango jacket looks like open over a soft shirt and some shorts.

Spring Trends: Boudoir Chic

Every spring/summer, we see a lot of really soft, feminine pieces and collections hit stores. This season there are lots of sheer fabrics, pale colours, ruffles, florals, lace and lingerie inspired pieces...

left to right: Alexander Wang, Chanel, Jen Kao, Marc Jacobs

Now for the recessionistas, here are a few pieces found in high street stores that were inspired by this trend:

clockwise from left: H&M 34.99, XXI, $34.00, ASOS £120.00 (GBP), Top Shop $55.00

I love, I want!

OK, I know... this is meant to be a fashion blog. But how incredible is every single thing she is wearing in this video? I want it all!

I can't find exactly what she's wearing, but here are some pieces you can put together if you're obsessed with this video too:

Clockwise from left to right: Top Shop Mesh Cup Crop Corset ($60 USD), Henry Holland for Pretty Polly Super Supsender Tights via ASOS.com($24 USD), Linda Farrow Projects Roisin Murphy Half Moon Sunglasses via ASOS.com (£400 GBP), American Apparel Nylon Spandex Micro-Mesh Twist Scarf ($14 USD), Urban Outfitters BDG 5-pocket Shortie ($39 USD), American Apparel Unisex Long-sleeved Gingham Button-up ($54 USD), Vera Wang Lavender Label Rosalyn Two Band Wedge Sandal via Shopbop.com ($325 USD).

I know the sunglasses seem a bit outrageous and I'm sure you can find retro looking sunglasses for a whole lot less...but they are 24-karat gold and insanely special, so there they are.
